Platoon – by Oliver Stone War brings out the worst in human beings. This is the attitude of director “Oliver Stone” to the Vietnam War in his epic film Platoon. Through examining significant scenes in the film, it can be argued that the film techniques used by the director are used to convey his anti-war attitude. During the village raid, Taylor gets scared and loses control then starts to shoot at villager that was hiding. No music was used in the scene, medium shots and close-ups were portrayed to show Taylor’s anger and also showed that he was scared. Bunny then ends up pushing the villager onto the ground and smashes his head in with a gun. No music was being played so the viewer could hear the head get smashed. Medium shots and close-up were used in the scene. Still during the village raid, Barnes shoots a villager in the head. In the scene there was no music, the viewer can only hear the villager yelling and shouting which was very annoying. Medium shots and close-ups were being switched between Barnes and the villager. High camera angle was used to show Barnes getting angry and in the heat of the moment he shoots her. Barnes than holds an innocent child hostage, threatening to kill her if they don’t start talking. No music was played in the scene, the viewer can only hear screaming and crying. Medium camera shots were used, low and medium camera angles were used. During the scene where the soldiers get ambushed in the forest, Barnes shoots Elias and leaves him there to die. No music was being used, the viewer can only hear Barnes, Elias and Taylor running through the forest. Medium shots were used when Elias and Barnes meet in the forest and close-ups were used to show the smirky looks on their faces before Barnes shoots Elias. Soldiers, including Barnes and Taylor, then get on the evacuation helicopter. While flying away Elias runs out of forest getting shot at. A haunting classical piece of music starts to play as Elias dies. Aerial camera shots were used for a dramatic death for Elias, medium shots switch between Elias, Barnes and Taylor. During the last battle, when Barnes was killing an unarmed Vietcong and Taylor pulls him off. Barnes than pushes him onto the ground and jumps on Taylor, then tries to kill Taylor but just before he could a bomb explodes. No music was used in the scene, all the viewer could hear is gunfire and shouting. Medium and low camera angles were used in the scene, medium and point-of-view camera shots used with the camera switching between Barnes and Taylor. After the bomb explosion, Taylor wakes up and he remembers Barnes tried to kill him. Taylor then finds a gun and goes looking for Barnes, then ends up killing him. No music was used in the scene, medium long shots and close-ups were used in the scene. My conclusion for the film Platoon by “Oliver Stone” is that the director was anti-war and shows that the ending was pessimistic. The director uses film techniques in the scenes to show that war brings out the worst in human beings.
